Zuelke Building

Location:  Appleton, Outagamie County, Wisconsin

The Reputed Phenomena:

Irving Zuelke opened this 168-foot office building in 1932.  It was the tallest building in Appleton until 1952, when AAL built their 183-foot building.  After the death of Mr. Zuelke, strange things began to happen in the building, which most people attributed it to the presence of his spirit.

Many of the reports came from the cleaning crews who worked late at night.  One worker reported that in 1996 he was sweeping a stairwell when he felt a hand tap him on the shoulder.  He turned around to see a ghostly hand and half a body disappear into the wall.

In 1990 there was a reception being held in the building, and they had hired a pianist to play on the second floor balcony.  When the pianist took a break, all of the elevators in the building simultaneously quite working, but later functioned normally after the pianist resumed playing.  Zuelke, himself, was a pianist, and probably appreciated the music being played in his building.
