Green-eyes
Bridge
Location: Augusta,
Eau Claire County, Wisconsin
|
The Reputed
History:
-
Several
years ago, a resident of Augusta, Wisconsin, murdered his family
then committed suicide by hanging himself on the bridge over the
Eau Claire River. His ghost has haunted the bridge for
nearly 100 years.
- Another
version of the story is that during the Depression a Black
man hung himself on the bridge and has since haunted the
area.
|
The
Investigation:
- The bridge, also popularly
known as "The Bridge Over Troubled Waters," has been confirmed
to exist.
- We have been
unable to verify the homicide/suicide story.
- Likewise, the
story of a Black man committing suicide has not been
verified.
|
The Reputed
Phenomena:
- At night, a silhouette
of the murderer's body can be seen hanging from the girders
of the bridge.
- According to other
accounts, the body is seen hanging off the side of the
bridge.
- After dark, the glowing
green eyes of the murderer can be seen on or near the
bridge.
|
The
Investigation:
- No silhouette
was observed by investigators.
- We did manage
to capture the possible cause of the mysterious glowing "green
eyes" and have it analyzed by entomologist Paula
K. Kleintjes, Ph.D. at the University of Wisconsin - Eau
Claire. She determined that the "green eyes"
were simply firefly larvae--better known as "glow
worms."
- We did speak
with someone who reported that in 1994 or 1995 she had
stayed in a cabin near the bridge with some friends.
After driving into Augusta for supplies, they returned to
the cabin and found ropes tied into nooses and a mysterious
shadow draped across the piano. They hastily left
without taking time to retrieve their gear, and they never
returned.
