The Reputed
History:
The church was built by a
minister (in other versions it was a priest) named "Jacob" who put so much time and
effort in its construction that he was willing to die for
it. About 30 years ago, some investors came to
Caryville and wanted to demolish both the church and the
Caryville schoolhouse across the road and construct new ones. The
minister became so enraged
that he removed the stairs from the church and hung himself
in the belfry. Later the townspeople spotted his body
hanging in the bell tower.
|
|
The
Investigation:
- The stories about a priest are
obviously false, since only Catholic and Episcopalian
churches have priests; Lutheran churches have
ministers.
- Local residents and church
members refute the story that a clergyman hung himself
in the belfry of the church.
|
|
The Reputed
Phenomena:
- Paranormal events have
occurred ever since the suicide of the clergyman.
- People have seen the
ghost of the minister (or priest) hanging inside the bell tower.
|
The
Investigation:
- The rumors of haunting
activity have been around for only 5-10 years--not 30 years.
- It is doubtful
that anybody has seen an apparition of a body hanging in the
belfry, since the story about the suicide is untrue.
- According to
local residents and members of the church, nothing paranormal
has ever occurred at the church or the schoolhouse.
