The
Investigation:
We interviewed a town
employee who had never heard of the spook lights. Other
old timers, including Leroy Busch who had been the town clerk
for 52 years, had never heard any stories about the lights.
We also checked with the Marathon County Historical Society and
the Wausau Headquarters Library and were unable to locate even
one person who had ever heard of any reports of this anomaly.
Eventually we found an
article in the February 18, 1993 issue of the Wausau Daily
Herald about a Gordon Mathwich who lived in Stettin and had
reported seeing the lights on his farm. He later renamed
his farm "Will-O-The-Wisp Acres" and had put up a sign
with that name on it.
