I know a place where things seem to roll uphill. How does it work?

Reference:

"They're places where high concentrations of energy cause magnetic disturbances. Animals won't cross them. Things inside them defy gravity. Balls roll uphill. Light bends. People grow and shrink."

THE LEGEND
Back in the early 1900's the state wanted to build a road over an old Indian burial ground. The grounds keeper called Indian Joe would not let them, so they ran him over and built the road over him. If you drive down the road which is up hill both ways and stop at the bottom, put your car in neutral Joe will push you up hill to the end of the road. If you put flour or any powder on the back of your car you will see the handprints after the push.

THE INVESTIGATION
Joe Ekhart.

Just a strange optical illusion

And what of the fingerprints and handprints? The logical explanation is that a light powder reveals prints that are already there; in fact, that's the basis of fingerprint detection in police work. "Latent fingerprints can be lifted from some objects years after they are made; crimes have been solved thusly," says the author at Abstract Dreamteching.

Gravity Hill tales. Many Gravity Hill factlets are offered as a "gee whiz" kind of thing with no storyline to them, just that if a car is slipped into neutral at the right place, it'll move as if by magic.

Similar examples with "mysterious helpers" are Gravity Road in Franklin Lakes, New Jersey, and Spook Hill in Lake Wales, Florida. If coming from the Shane side of the tracks, which is the preferred direction, the road rises to meet the tracks about four feet before and once they meet, it drops about seven feet and makes a serious right turn to run parallel with the tracks. From the East the incline and subsequent decline are imperceptible but a survey crew was out in the last ten years and records this as fact.

Laurinburg, NC - Gravity Hill - It was once said that a woman and her kid and dog were killed when their car stalled and an 18-wheeler came by and hit them instantly. And from that day on, if you park at the bottom of the hill and cut your car off, she is known to push you back up the hill out of harms ways.  http://theshadowlands.net/places/northcarolina.htm

Anomalies of gravitation in Italy and Poland

Moorsville

Name: Gravity Hill
Location: Keller Hill Rd., off State Rd. 42

About sixty years ago, an elderly woman was making her way up this hill when her car ran out of gas. The woman got out of her car and began pushing it up the hill. She was not very strong, however, and eventually, the car rolled backwards on top of her. As she lie there, injured, an oncoming truck ran over and killed the woman. Today, if one puts his car in neutral at the bottom of the hill, the old woman will push it to the top.

North Carolina--the back woods--A few miles from the above sighting was a place known as "Gravity Hill". Legend states that the ghost of an old lady pushes your car along the road for about 100 yards. If you put flour or some type of powder on your bumper the ghost will supposedly leave handprints. It seems that this spot is also in a slight incline because once the car has come to a stop then the car can coast on back down the hill.

Mysterious spots pockmark the tourist landscape, promising to show Nature and Physics gone berserk. Mystery Spots offer an amazingly similar menu of wall-walking, seat-balancing, body-shrinking and -growing tricks; most are placed suspiciously near interstate interchanges and bloated tourist meccas.

The drama of the unexplained is best conveyed by an old codger, wise to government coverups and the shifty vagaries of science. Listening to the ravings of the expert at the Mystery Spot Santa Cruz, CA, is half the fun. Unfortunately, many mystery spots fail this crucial test, employing 14-year-olds to convince skeptical summer visitors of their spot's veracity. "Scientists think it's caused by the 'igmmeous' rock in the hill, I think . . . " offered one bored, gum-clicking expert.

For our money, America's premier mystery spot is the Oregon Vortex near Gold Hill, OR, open to the public since 1930. Tennis balls really do seem to roll uphill here, brooms really do stand on end. After subjecting many spots to rigorous, very scientific tests, our Mystery Spot Test Kit TM indicates that the Oregon Vortex is the most disturbed.

What causes the mysterious goings-on here? No one knows. One theory is that a great beam of "high velocity soft electrons" exits the earth through the vortex. Another claims that a giant underground device produces the weird effects.

A broom stands on end at the Mystery Spot in Blowing Rock, NC.

And there's always a new theory on the gift shop shelves, the latest explaining how TIME speeds up and S-S-L-L-O-W-W-W-W-S-S-S down in a vortex, depending on where you stand and when. One man who apparently knew the secret of the Oregon Vortex -- John Litster -- studied its effects first-hand for more than forty years. He even corresponded with Einstein on the subject. What he uncovered no one will ever know, for he burned all his notes before his death.

"The world isn't yet ready for what goes on here," he warned.

Anomalies of gravitation in Italy and Poland

Are cars really rolling uphill in that graveyard near my town? A5.7 There are some places where the land is shaped in such a way that it can sometimes appear that things are going uphill when they are really going down. Some people attribute this type of activity to paranormal causes. Jason Hoffman (Jason.Hoffman@nopc.jaxx.com) explains it this way: "This was explained very simply on a TV show several years back. There is a place known as "Gravity Hill" where the road is on a slight decline. But the trees on the side of the road, instead of being vertical, lean down the hill. So that if you are standing sideways on the road, with the down side to your left, the trees `should' appear to lean to the right, but actually lean to the left. This makes the downward side of the hill seem to be the up side of the hill. The grade is so slight that it throws off your balance, so you become con- fused. "This has been illustrated in fun houses at amusement parks...'The Leaning Room'. After being in the room for a minute, your natural sense of balance tries to correct itself. Then, you try to roll a ball down some parallel bars, but the ball rolls up instead." Here is another explanation by Paul Johnson (paj@gec-mrc.co.uk): "The brain uses a collection of techniques for deciding which way is up. The balancing organs in the inner ears only work when you stand still, so for most purposes the brain uses visual rules-of-thumb. "Amongst these are: 1: The ground is, on average, horizontal. 2: Walls are vertical. "So these mystery spots are usually on broad, empty plains with a slight slope. The slope isn't noticable, and rule 1 is applied by the brain to get a wrong answer for the horizontal. Hence any slight lessening of the slope looks like a slight upward rise on a flat plain, even though it is actually still downhill. So things rolling down the slope look like they are rolling uphill. "Sometimes locals exploit rule 2 by putting up buildings that conform to the visual horizontal instead of the actual one. This reinforces the illusion quite strongly. "If you are ever shown one of these spots, check a map with contour lines drawn on to find out how flat it really is."
